For all those Nvidia Shield tablet fans and owners out there, the semiconductor giant has said that the tablet won’t be blessed with the Android 8.0 Oreo update.
The Nvidia Shield saw two iterations – the original one launched in 2014 and subsequently the K1 launched in 2015. Both the tablets did garner a respectable following and over their life have received quite a few updates including Android OS updates as well. However, it turns out that Nvidia isn’t too keen on bringing the Android 8.0 Oreo update to the Shield tablet.
Manuel Guzman, a Software QA at Nvidia, confirmed the company’s plans as far as the tablet and Android Oreo are concerned. Guzman said that Nvidia Shield Tablet (2014) and the Shield K1 Tablet (2015) won’t be receiving the Android Oreo update.
“We will be providing an update soon for the SHIELD Tablet K1 based on Android N. Android O is not coming to the ST/ST K1”, noted Guzman in his tweet.
He however said that K1 will receive one more update based on Android N but a full upgrade to Android Oreo is not planned for either version of the Shield tablet.
Shield provided a good platform for launch of Nvidia’s GeForce Now streaming service. There have been no reports on whether Nvidia is planning to launch a new Shield tablet; however, we have known that Nvidia has been experimenting with other Shield launches behind the scenes but so far, nothing has come to fruition. Just a few weeks ago, a Shield Portable 2 prototype appeared in the wild but aside from that, there has been little news.
