The rocks appear to have fallen near the “Waterfall Route”, a popular climbing route on the East Buttress of the monolith. This is the area where Horsetail Fall flows in winter and spring, he added.
“There is one confirmed fatality”, park officials said late Wednesday afternoon.
Gediman says the injured person was being taken to a hospital near the park.
Yosemite National Park rangers and search and rescue officials are assessing the situation.
The accident occurred during what is the peak climbing season in Yosemite.
The National Park Service said the park would remain open and services were not affected.
