In an interview with ndtv.com last month, Kamal Nath refuted reports of him threatening to leave the Congress to join the BJP if he is not given a shot at running for Chief Minister, which many believe is his dream job.
Signalling the ushering in of a younger generation of Congress leaders, the 46-year-old Jyotiraditya Scindia is likely to be announced as the chief ministerial candidate for Congress party in the upcoming Madhya Pradesh elections in 2018, senior leader Kamal Nath said.
However, the official announcement would be made by the party at an appropriate time, he said.
Nath was addressing the media in Scindia’s Guna constituency. His changed stance will result in new dynamics in the party, in which several regional satraps, including Digvijay Singh, Kamal Nath, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Kantilal Bhuria, Arun Yadav and Ajay Singh “Rahul”.
Asked which of the three leaders would be top contenders as the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate, he said: “I don’t think there is any fixed rule on that”.
KKamal Nath is touring his home state ahead of the election which is due by late 2018.
Speaking to reporters in Guna, Kamal Nath said that there was no opposition to the name of Scindia as the leader of the party in the state.
Digvijaya Singh will embark on the 3,400-km Narmada Yatra around the river. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will seek a fourth consecutive term. Now, in an attempt to keep himself relevant in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh whether or not as a Congressman, Singh has chose to go on a six-month-long journey walking around the Narmada river starting Saturday.
Assembly elections in the state, where Congress has been out of power since 2003, will be held later this year.
While Scindia was not declared the CM candidate in the 2013 polls, he headed the election campaign committee of the party. “We have gone into elections not projecting a face”.
