Injured Mendy set for long spell out for Man City

Manchester City picked up an important Champions League victory at home to Shakhtar Donetsk that will do wonders for their hopes of making the knock-out stages.

Mendy told Telefoot he now aims to be recognised as the best player in the world in his position, overhauling fellow left-backs such as Real Madrid’s Marcelo and Bayern Munich’s David Alaba. Guardiola has alternatives to Mendy, but stressed the defender’s injury is a “major setback”.

Mendy, 23, joined City from French champions Monaco this summer on a five-year contract for a reported £52 million to make him the world’s most expensive defender. “We will see as we go along”. Mendy is going to see the famous Dr Ramon Cugat, Guardiola’s most trusted doctor, later this week.

After Guardiola allowed Gaël Clichy and Aleksandar Kolarov to leave this summer, Mendy is City’s only recognised left back, although Danilo and Fabian Delph have filled in there too this term.

“Our first impression will be a little bit long out of the pitch”.

The Brazil worldwide has made such an impact since arriving at the Etihad Stadium from Palmeiras in January that it has been claimed the club already want to discuss new terms. “By then I am pretty sure it will be longer than we expect, than we would like”. “Very frustrating for him, first as a person”, Guardiola said.

“The way we want to play, we will miss him a lot”.

“Tonight, we beat an awesome team”.

After two games City have six points and are already three points clear of Shakhtar and Napoli.

“We made an extraordinary performance, especially in the second half”.

The City coach said the same about Aguero breaking Eric Brook’s 79-year scoring record for the club. Their full-backs are awesome players, they are fast, well organised defensively.
