A woman died after she was attacked with an ax by her ex-husband Wednesday morning in Chalmette, officials said.
Deputy Chief John Doran said Kimberly Owens was believed to have left her home to go to work when her ex-husband emerged, possibly from a hiding place under the home, and attacked her with an ax.
“My understanding is she was leaving for work early that morning and was walking to her vehicle and … the ex-husband … emerged from underneath the house”, Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief John Doran said at a press conference.
Mark Owens, 56, turned himself in to police after allegedly killing Kimberly Owens, his ex-wife, with an ax on Wednesday in Chalmette, La.
“He may have been hiding – that hasn’t been confirmed yet – and attacked her, surprised her”.
Owens was later charged with second-degree murder after turning himself in. She was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Owens’ mother watched the horror unfold and begged Mark to stop butchering her daughter, police said.
He said the man had been arrested in 2015 for a “domestic-type” incident. The Sheriff’s Office said the couple has at least one son.
The victim’s mother and a neighbor witnessed the brutal attack and alerted police, who arrived about three minutes after receiving the first call.
Wednesday morning’s slaying was the second homicide reported in St. Bernard Parish this year, officials said.
