Why Rahul Gandhi called Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru, Ambedkar NRIs?

He also alleged that Congress did bungling in the loan and it was not repaid, and that Sonia and Rahul were made directors of a company – Young Indian – in November 2010, which acquired nearly all the shareholding of the AJL and all its properties, reportedly worth Rs. 5,000 crore.

Gandhi remarked while Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa, Jawahar Lal Nehru came back from England to contribute to the freedom struggle. “But, when an idea is good, India understands it very quickly, and uses it and shows the world how it can be used”, he added.

The newspaper gained limelight after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy filed a case in 2012 against Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Congress treasurer Motilal Vora, party leaders Oscar Fernandes, Suman Dubey and Sam Pitroda.

“Mahatma Gandhi was an NRI. Ambedkar, Patel, Maulana Azad, every one of them went to the outside world, saw the outside world, returned to India and used some of the ideas that they had got and transformed India”.

Gandhi’s call came during an interaction with NRIs at the iconic Times Square on Wednesday at the end of a two week-long speaking tour of the United States, which many say has helped raise his political profile and emerge from his usually reticent style.

Citing the example of late scientist Varghese Kurien, Gandhi said persons like Kurien brought white revolution to the country. “One of the biggest successes in India, the milk that most of India drinks, it was a man called Mr Kurien, he was an NRI. There are thousands of examples that we have not recognised”, he claimed. Some people view India as a geophraphical construct. “There are forces in our country that are dividing it”, he said. “So for me, anybody who has the ideas that make up India is an Indian”.
