An FIR was lodged on Friday evening against Aligarh president of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mahila Morcha Sangeeta Varshney, who was seen repeatedly slapping a teenage girl, for dating a Muslim man, in a video that was widely shared on social media websites.
An FIR was registered against a woman BJP leader, Sangeeta Varshney, at the Gandhi Park police station for slapping a girl who was accompanying a youth from minority community in a tea shop, police said on Saturday.
In the video, Varshney said, “Tere ko samajh mein nahi aataa kaun Hindu hai, kaun Musalmaan hai”.
However, according to the video clips of the incident (in possession with TOI), the girl’s father had admitted his daughter’s “mistake”.
Varshney also called up the girl’s father and also asked him to slap his daughter. He was arrested and released on bail, police officials said.
In a complaint, girl’s father stated that on September 19 (Tuesday) his daughter went to Naurangabad market to buy something where a woman, identified as Sangeeta Varshney had stopped her and accused her of going around with a man from other community.
The youth in question was arrested on charges of “obscenity” in public place and released on bail later, according to police officials. Action should be taken against all those who indulge in moral policing and threaten common people in the name of love jihad”, said Sevendra Kumar.In the video, Varshney was seen telling the girl, “Have you no shame?
When the BJP leader Varshney was later contacted by reporters, she said she does not have any issues with Muslims.
She also that she was proud of what she did and would not hesitate to do the same again as she can not “tolerate” such Hindu-Muslim relationships.
