“Now, I know you think that’s a picture of me kissing Sean Spicer, but in the spirit of Sean Spicer, no it isn’t”. I’m kidding, of course. “And however you feel about the president – and you do feel about the president – you can’t deny that every show is influenced by Trump in some way”.
“Protect yourself at all times!“. The bit subtly slammed the Trump administration’s claims about the size of the crowd at the inauguration in January. Michael Reynolds, the acting director of the National Park Service, confirmed as much.
NBC’s satirical sketch show “Saturday Night Live” won nine Emmys, including statuettes for Trump impersonator Alec Baldwin, Melissa McCarthy’s skits on former White House spokesman Sean Spicer, Kate McKinnon’s turns as losing presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and White House aide Kellyanne Conway.
“This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys“. Both CNN and Fox News – cable networks notorious for providing homes to ex-White House press secretaries – shot down the idea of Spicer joining their team earlier this month.
I certainly hope not.
The photo sparked backlash the day after the ceremony, as lots of viewers were already angered that Spicer was invited to the Emmys for a surprise cameo, saying it “normalized” the official who uttered many falsehoods during his tenure at the White House. “Whether or not you agree isn’t your job”. “I’m not one of these people who has a couple of drinks and goes around kissing people that I don’t know”, Corden assured before a collage of photographs appeared on the screen displaying the host kissing other famous faces such as Harry Styles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bryan Cranston, Allison Janney, Ken Jeong and Daniel Radcliffe.
The Associated Press got a hold of Spicer while he was on an airplane (presumably on the tarmac), and he seemed to have had a great time at the Emmys.
