Fatal Police Shooting Shuts Down Lanes on 5 Freeway

Authorities say California Highway Patrol officers fatally shot a man with a knife who was walking on Interstate 5 in Los Angeles.

The CHP received a call at 11:50 p.m. on Saturday about a pedestrian walking on the freeway, said CHP officer Elizabeth Kravig.

The shooting occurred near the North Mission Road exit and the northbound lanes are closed beginning at 10 Freeway interchange, where drivers will be diverted onto the eastbound 10 toward San Bernardino.

The northbound 5 freeway between the 10 freeway and Broadway in Boyle Heights and Lincoln Heights are now closed for police activity. “Gomez said “[the pedestrian] produced a knife and it was used in a manner where the officers felt they were in danger”, according to the L.A. Times.

It was not clear how many officers were involved in the shooting or how many shots were fired.

The northbound 5 freeway was closed to all traffic between the 10 freeway and Broadway.

The first and second lanes of the southbound 5 freeway were reopened earlier this morning.
