History expanded “Vikings” to 20 episodes per season (split into two 10-episode blocks) a year ago after airing nine episodes in the show’s first season and 10 each in Seasons 2 and 3. The renewal comes ahead of the series’ Season 5 premiere in November. Vikings season 6 will have 20 episodes with one directed by Winnick.
Also in the sixth season, Katheryn Winnick, who plays the Viking shield maiden Lagertha Lothbrok, is slate to make her directorial debut. As for season 4, season 5 of Vikings will be divided into two parts of 10 episodes and it will begin by a double episode.
Since its premiere in 2013, an outstanding roster of Canadian actors alongside Winnick, including Alexander Ludwig, Jessalyn Gilsig, Donal Logue, and Season 5 newcomers, Adam Copeland and Kris Holden-Ried, have brought their talents to the Vikings tribe. Additionally, the series reached 34.3 million total viewers in linear Live+7.
With the upcoming season of Vikings set to be it’s biggest yet, with the series diverging from Ragnar’s story to focus on his band of sons, it’s no surprise that Eli Lehrer, History’s executive vice president of programming, is excited to see the series expanding to forty episodes over the next two seasons.
The new season will feature Jonathan Rhys Meyers – who creator Michael Hirst exclusively told us was flawless for the series. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with one of the greatest writers in this era of Peak TV and entertaining our viewers with 40 new episodes over the next two seasons“. She’s repped by CAA, Alchemy Entertainment, and attorney Jeff Bernstein.
Hirst serves as executive producer along with Morgan O’Sullivan of World 2000 (The Count of Monte Cristo; “The Tudors”), Sheila Hockin (“The Tudors”, “The Borgias”), John Weber of Take 5 Productions (“The Tudors”, “The Borgias”), Sherry Marsh, Alan Gasmer, and James Flynn (“The Tudors”, “The Borgias”).
The victor of eight Canadian Screen Awards including Best International Drama, Vikings is co-produced by celebrated Canadian company Take 5 Productions. MGM Television serves as the worldwide distributor outside of Ireland and Canada.
