Sheriff: Man Accused Of Killing Ex-Wife Confessed

Now her ex-husband, who is charged with her murder, is being held on $500,000 bond.

He admitted to strangling his ex-wife and then led authorities to her body, located in a wooden area in the western part of the county.

Her former husband, Steven McDowell, 44, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, police said.

“Tragedy struck into the hearts of friends and family across the nation”, Crystal McDowell’s boyfriend, Paul Hargrave, told ABC News in a statement. “Our worst fears became a sad unwanted reality”. Crystal has passed. However Crystal’s spirit will continue to grow and thrive through her children and those that knew her best. “Given the arguments they had the week prior to her being missing”, Hargrave said.

Crystal Serrate McDowell, 37, went missing right before Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, Texas, on August 25, 2017.

Crystal McDowell was last seen in the Houston suburb of Baytown on August 25, a day before Harvey reached Texas.

The pair’s children – ages 5 and 8 – were allowed to stay with their father amid the search for Crystal, but were turned over to Child Protective Services by the end of the weekend, according to the Chronicle. “They left the vehicle unlocked and they left the keys in the console”. McDowell was nowhere to be found.

Now, that man, Steven McDowell, has confessed to the crime, according to the sheriff’s office. Her uncle said McDowell never talked about their fighting, only that they “had their disagreements”. Hargrave says he wasn’t shocked by news of McDowell’s arrest.

A sheriff says a southeast Texas man accused of killing his ex-wife on the eve of Hurricane Harvey gave a tearful confession under questioning.
