Schools closing in metro Atlanta, coastal Georgia due to Hurricane Irma

“One of the biggest take homes is that storm surge is complex and there are lots of aspects to it”, said Mark Risse, Director of Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant.

The National Hurricane Center placed the entire Georgia coast under a hurricane watch Saturday as residents packed their cars and trickled onto the highways in six counties under a mandatory evacuation. However, some local governments urged people to leave as soon as possible Friday. But when Samantha Ramirez began stocking up for Hurricane Irma’s approach toward Georgia, she ran into problems finding bottled water.

The latest projected track of Hurricane Irma at 8 p.m. has the powerful storm continuing shift to the west, with the center of the storm moving from Florida into Georgia, not SC. A tropical storm warning was issued for the first time in Atlanta. A hurricane watch was also issued for the SC coast from the Georgia line to Edisto Beach, about 40 miles (65 kilometers) southwest of Charleston. That storm caused three deaths in Georgia and an estimated $500 million in damage. The State of Emergency went into effect 8 a.m. Thursday.

Georgia Southern University announced it will close and classes will be canceled September 8-12.

The 30 counties under the State of Emergency are: Appling, Atkinson, Bacon, Brantley, Bryan, Bulloch, Burke, Camden, Candler, Charlton, Chatham, Clinch, Coffee, Echols, Effingham, Emanuel, Evans, Glynn, Jenkins, Jeff Davis, Liberty, Long, McIntosh, Pierce, Screven, Tattnall, Toombs, Treutlen, Wayne and Ware Counties.

A comparison to Hurricane Matthew’s storm surge could be helpful for anticipating Irma’s effects, Gambill said.

As of the 1:00 pm ET advisory, Hurricane Irma is a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 130 miles per hour moving at 9 miles per hour to the north.

Nitz said parts of the metro will also see a high risk for tornadoes Monday into Tuesday as the storm makes its way through the metro.

“I don’t know, honey”, his wife replied.

Couple Felicia Clark and Johnny Thompson along with their two dogs, Gracie and Roscoe, evacuated from Florida’s gulf coast and have been staying in a downtown Atlanta hotel since Sunday. I have all my mother’s antiques.

Barbuda also faces the potential of being hit by Hurricane Jose later this week.
