Its stucco-covered walls have remained standing after each hurricane, including the massive killer storm that wreaked havoc on South Florida’s east coast in 1928 and another that flooded the Estate Section and points south in 1947. All could be underwater by the end of the century.
“It really beat up Mar-a-Lago very badly”, Trump claimed, though he only applied for building permits to do $3,000 worth of hurricane repairs.
The members-only club, which Trump has used as a winter White House, was ordered to evacuate Friday morning along with the entire town of Palm Beach as Irma approaches. The Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact says the increase could be up to 81in by 2100.
“In 30 years, the grounds of Mar-a-Lago could be under at least a foot of water for 210 days a year because of tidal flooding along the intracoastal water way, with the water rising past some of the cottages and bungalows”, The Guardian reported. He also believes Mar-a-Lago has the best meatloaf in America.
Yet an Associated Press investigation published previous year revealed there was little evidence of large-scale damage to Mar-a-Lago, and that Trump also kept some of the insurance money for his personal use rather than spending it on repairs.
The president, who is 71, is unlikely to be around to see that happen.
According to HuffPost, the federal insurance program provides affordable insurance to properties in vulnerable, flood-prone areas that private insurers wouldn’t gamble on insuring. Sixty miles south of the resort, on Sunny Isles Beach, Trump owns three 45-story luxury condo towers, collectively known as Trump Towers, Sunny Isles.
Several other Trump Organization properties could also be tested by a diminished Irma if it turns north once it reaches Florida, as several computer models predict.
In his book Crippled America – “The rhetoric of this book is both exhausted and tiring in equal measure”, according to Kings Review – Trump said, without explaining his reasoning, that he does not believe in climate change.
