“The Current War” is a film worth noting.
The first trailer for The Current War has been unveiled online.
In the footage, Cumberbatch is joined by Michael Shannon as Edison’s rival, George Westinghouse, who competes with Edison to “create a marketable and sustainable electricity system” for America in the 19th century.
And at the end of the trailer, just when you think the narrative has taken shape, we get the sudden appearance of Nikola Tesla (Nicholas Hoult) with his cocky declaration, “I fix problems for idiots”.
Whileanyone who’s plugged an AC adapter into a wall socket to power or charge a device will know how that war ultimately went, the Victorian era drama looks to give immediacy to the escalating enmity between Edison and Westinghouse.
Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals, Man of Steel) plays George Westinghouse. The trailer also offers a glimpse of Nikola Tesla, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult, who is introduced as a lesser known scientist but is praised for his ground-breaking studies.
Directed by filmmaker Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (This Is Not a Love Story), The Current War could position itself as a contender for the Oscars, according to the first reactions of Toronto.
If you can’t be bothered with books, rejoice: that story is being turned into a film.
“The Current War” will open in theaters on November 24.
