Putin Stresses Dialogue to Resolve N. Korea’s Nuke Issue

The Russian leader said there are “many reasonable people in the current (US) administration” who are experienced and who have dealt with similar crises.

The leaders encouraged China to put pressure on North Korea to bring the “regime to its senses”.

The news comes as tensions continue to rise between North Korea and the USA following Pyongyang’s most powerful nuclear test this past weekend of a hydrogen bomb capable of being fitted onto an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Garlauskas stressed the need to prepare for “multiple contingencies” involving North Korea.

In a phone conversation on Monday with South Korean President Moon Jae-In, Trump said he would support “in principle” the USA ally fitting its missiles with heavier warheads, boosting its deterrence against North Korea.

Turnbull said he and Trump also discussed the battle against Islamic State, including in the Philippines.

Mr Trump is to speak on Wednesday with China’s president. He said earlier this year that the battery will protect 10 million South Koreans in the area outside of Seoul in addition to US bases and vital seaports.

But he warned the North could fire ballistic missiles at any time from easily concealed mobile launchers.

The U.S. reportedly floated its toughest sanctions yet against North Korea in a draft UN Security Council resolution Wednesday that, if approved, would ban all oil and natural gas exports to North Korea.

It would also prohibit North Korea from being part of any joint ventures or cooperative agreements. “China will make close communication with relevant parties with an objective, fair and responsible attitude”, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Thursday.

US and South Korean military officials insist THAAD is needed to complement Patriot missiles that are already in position to provide security for the South Korean capital and surrounding areas, which have a population of some 25 million.

It would order all countries to freeze all funds, other financial assets and economic resources outside North Korea “that are owned or controlled, directly or indirectly” by Kim Jong Un, the ruling Worker’s Party of Korea, the government, or by individuals or entities acting on their behalf or at their direction.

According to Cheong Wa Dae spokesperson Park Soo-hyun, Moon and Trump also agreed on the need to apply further pressure on Pyongyang, and the U.S. leader reaffirmed the country’s policy of defending South Korea.

Russian Federation and China opposed the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, system, saying it has the potential of fueling an arms race.

Thousands of policemen were deployed to protect the Thaad systems which are four in number and are in addition to two other Thaad system batteries installed in the village in April which also birthed a similar clash.

The placing of additional THAAD launchers will likely trigger an angry response from area residents and activists who have opposed the system. In the extremely tense situation on the Korean Peninsula, the two militaries would have to take into account the possibility of a nuclear attack with just minutes of warning, exacerbating the risk of miscalculations or mistakes triggering a nuclear exchange. The wages of workers sent overseas provide foreign currency for the Pyongyang government. He said it “offers a genuine way to defuse the tensions and a step-by-step settlement”. For that reason, both China and Russian Federation have repeatedly condemned the deployment and demanded the removal of the THAAD batteries from South Korea.

South Korea is keeping open the option of dialogue with North Korea, and hopes Washington and Seoul can develop a diplomatic “roadmap”, Cho Hyun, South Korea’s second Vice Foreign Minister, said at a seminar in Washington on Tuesday. “Hopefully, we’re not going to have to use it on North Korea”.

The 13-page draft condemns North Korea’s September 2 test of its most powerful nuclear explosion and its “flagrant disregard” of numerous previous Security Council resolutions that prohibit Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile activities.

President Trump noted that this latest provocation only serves to increase the global community’s resolve to counter North Korea’s prohibited activities.

Abe will meet Putin on Thursday.

Putin said that he and Abe decisively condemned North Korea’s launch of a ballistic missile that flew over Japan.
