Our correspondent learnt that the attackers were believed to be a robbery gang.
Unidentified gunmen have attacked a church in Lagos killing a Reverend Father in the early hours of Friday.
Reports suggest the priest was shot and left in a pool of his blood after the suspected armed robbers disguised as parishioners to gain entry into the church.
The shooting incident was confirmed by the Command Public Relations Officer, Olarinde Famous-Cole.
After the mass, they were said to have requested to see the priest for prayer.
Father Nwankwo, who is now receiving treatment at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, was attacked by the gunmen after the 6:30am mass.
One of the assassins was said to have brought out a locally made pistol and shot at the Rev Father who raised an alarm, forcing the bandits to flee the area and scaled through the fence towards an adjoining canal.
The incident happened at about 8.45 – 9am, shortly after the priest attended to a church member who came for confession.
Famous-Cole, explained that CP Edgal, had also paid a visited to Rev Father Nwankwo, at the hospital where he’s been treated and he also confirmed that the Rev Father is alive and responding to treatment.
“CP Edgal has deployed a crack team of detectives and operational officers to the scene and all areas leading to the canal, where the suspects were said to have ran towards”.
“Already, five suspects have been arrested in connection with the crime and they are being interrogated”.
“Five suspects were arrested in connection with this act and they are now being diligently interrogated for vital information to aid the Police investigation”.
“The commissioner is advising Lagosians to be vigilant and security conscious at this time”.
“He has also ordered the deployment of static police guards in all churches and mosques across the state”.
