While Iran is the country that is most suspected by United Kingdom officials of providing support to North Korea, others, including Russian Federation, have been mentioned as well.
British officials fear that North Korea’s sudden advancement in developing nuclear weapons could be due to secret support from Tehran, The Sunday Telegraph reported.
“For them to have done this entirely on their own stretches the bounds of credulity”, remarked a source from the Foreign Office in the report.
In addition, the report stated that Western officials believe that foreign countries likely supplied North Korea with either the equipment or the expertise needed in order to take additional steps on its path toward becoming a nuclear state.

The five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany conducted long-running talks with Iran that led to a 2015 deal for worldwide sanctions to be lifted in exchange for Tehran curbing its nuclear activities.
Asked whether a strike against Guam would be covered under the clause that commits North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members to come to the defense of each other, he said: “I will not speculate about whether Article Five will be applied in such a situation”.
“If our participation in talks is wanted, I will say yes immediately”, Merkel said in an interview published Sunday in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung newspaper. The diplomatic process was “long but important”, and eventually resulted in a “good end”, she said.
“I could also imagine such a format for the settlement of the North Korean conflict”, she told FAZ. Europe and in particular Germany should be ready to contribute a very active part.
