US Open: Nadal eases to semi-finals

Keys, the 15th seed, will be playing in her second Slam semi-final after the 2015 Australian Open.

Vandeweghe is the third American woman into the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows this year, joining Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens, who won their fourth-round matches a day earlier.

The women’s semi-finals will be an all-American affair for the first time since 1981 after CoCo Vandeweghe and Madison Keys set-up a last-four duel.

No. 1 Rafael Nadal advanced to his sixth US Open semifinal on Wednesday demolishing Russian 19-year-old Andrey Rublev 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 in 96 minutes.

Rublev broke into the top 100 for the first time in June and is now No.53, having won 13 of his last 17 matches.

Roger Federer of Switzerland celebrates defeating Feliciano Lopez of Spain during their third round Men’s Singles match on Day Six of the 2017 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on September 2, 2017 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City. Federer said he was anxious about his movement in his first-round match against 19-year-old American Frances Tiafoe, then had timing issues in his second-rounder against 35-year-old Russian Mikhail Youzhny – and both of those contests went five sets.

The 19-year-old Rublev, who grew up idolising Nadal and had his poster pinned up on his bedroom wall, was smiling from ear-to-ear as he posed for pre-match photos on Arthur Ashe Stadium court with his hero.

Before the tournament began, Nadal was honest as can be when asked whether he hoped to face Federer at the only Grand Slam tournament where they’ve never met. “At least I am”.

Though Dolgopolov is unseeded, he had won two of the last three meetings with Nadal.

Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza is assured of moving up to No. 1 in the WTA rankings for the first time, despite losing in the U.S. Open’s fourth round.

Vandeweghe reached the semi-finals, knocking Karolina Pliskova off her world number one perch. Brady was never able to get footing and find the depth on her shots, nor take advantage of her normally strong serve, only making 16 first serve attempts in the match.

The U.S. Open runner-up a year ago, Pliskova advanced to face either No. 20 CoCo Vandeweghe or unseeded Lucie Safarova.

“More importantly he doesn’t have the backhand anymore and if you don’t have a backhand as a weapon you don’t beat Federer and Nadal”.

In inflicting Thiem with his first loss from two sets up at a slam, Del Potro proved that it’s not just his deadly forehand but arguably the biggest heart in tennis that threatens to bring Federer unstuck once again.

The Swiss master bounces back in style and takes the second set 6-3.

Federer was trying to do his part when he brought an 11-0 record against No. 33 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber into their night matchup. The top-seeded Nadal faces Alexandr Dolgopolov on Monday afternoon.
