Hurricane Irma: Hernando County schools cancel classes Thursday and Friday

On Wednesday the unsafe storm pushed Gulf County Commissioners to declare a local state of emergency. The Atlanta Motor Speedway is located in Hampton, Ga., outside of the state of the emergency area.

The district has also chose to close the extended day programs at elementary schools on Friday and Monday and has postponed the ACT test that area high schoolers were to take on Saturday along with Florida Standards Assessments retakes and End-of-Course makeup exams.

All after-school activities planned for Friday and Monday, as well as all weekend activities have been canceled in Flagler.

The closure will affect regular school day activities, as well as extra-curricular events. The hotline will be available from 8 7 p.m.

The Weather Authority meteorologists believe northeast Florida coastal counties could see tropical storm force winds by Sunday evening and possibly hurricane force winds (75 miles per hour or above) on Monday.

Monday’s scheduled St. Augustine Beach City Commission meeting and budget hearing at St. Augustine Beach City Hall have been canceled because of Hurricane Irma, according to the city’s website. This storm is unprecedented in size and intensity.

This will most likely happen on Thursday and Friday, based on the forecast. “It’s too close to call at this point”.

“We will make decisions by Saturday afternoon or Saturday evening to close bridges”. Lowndes officials say hotels there are already booked up by people evacuating Florida.

The emergency declaration for Camden, Glynn, McIntosh, Liberty, Chatham and Bryan counties came on the recommendation of the state’s Emergency Operations command, the Governor’s Office said.

Students are under mandatory evacuation orders. Have a plan. If you feel like you need to go, leave and go early.

“Historically what we will see before this is over is the rooms will book from the Georgia-Florida line north of Chattanooga, Tennessee”, Dukes said. They will instead have to show two forms of identification.
