Here’s how wildfire smoke can affect your health

Oregon’s high school sports governing association issued a memo in recent days outlining what schools should do with outdoor athletic competitions if the air quality remained poor. There are more than 800 wildfires burning in the region.

Idaho DEQ monitoring stations show air quality in Cottonwood at “hazardous” levels, now (as of 10:30 a.m., September 5) at 415 on the Air Quality Index (AQI).

The Environmental Protection Agency listed the air quality as unhealthy to very unhealthy in and around Portland on Tuesday.

Smoke from wildfires in the northwest United States is having a serious affect on some locations in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana.

You don’t want to let outside air into a place with clean air. People should limit outdoor activity while the alert is in effect, especially children, the elderly and those with respiratory problems.

“People with chronic diseases should check with their health care provider before wearing a mask”, the department’s press release states. Now the Spokane air quality has reached the worst stage on this scale, receiving the classification of “hazardous” according to a breaking report by KREM 2 News. “So it’s not something that you’re going to be able to wear normally and not expect to feel some effects from it”, Dr. Colby Adams, the director of environmental health and the Department of Health and Welfare, said. It’s important to drink plenty of water and stay indoors.

He said the school cancelled boys and girls soccer games Tuesday.

– Stay inside, close windows or use air conditioners if you have them. But the air quality improvement will be gradual as there is so much smoke in the air, he said. We know that people with Alzheimer’s have more particulates in their brains…
