Senior journalist Gauri Lankesh shot dead in Bengaluru

Lankesh was the editor of the Gauri Lankesh Patrike, a magazine described as an “anti-establishment” publication. He said he had met Lankesh recently, but she did not talk of any threat to her life. Before she could confront the riders, she was shot repeatedly.

Lankesh, who was in her 50s, was the daughter of famous poet-turned-journalist P Lankesh, who started Lankesh Patrike. Her home is in Ideal Home Layout in Rajarajeshwari Nagar.

Bengaluru deputy commissioner of police MN Anucheth confirmed her dead. More details are yet to be known.

In 2016, she was convicted in two cases of criminal defamation filed against a story she had published back in 2008.

Lankesh was convicted in the case previous year by a judicial magistrate first class court in Hubballi and sentenced to six months’ jail. Lankesh had been granted bail.

Speaking to the media, Siddaramaiah expressed his shock and sadness over the murder Gauri Lankesh.

Ashok said there was no doubt that this was part of a larger conspiracy to kill rationalist ideas.

During the same time she had told The Wire that she was concerned about the state of freedom of expression in India and that she felt that people who questioned the ruling ideology were targeted. Writer Huchangi Prasad said his assaulters kept calling him a traitor. He died in hospital four days later.
