A second man has been detained over the disappearance of a nine-year-old girl at a wedding party in Isère, eastern France.
Police are concerned she may have been abducted in a vehicle and scores of search and rescue teams, divers and cavers are searching the local area in search of the girl.
According to local news sources, the suspect, who was also a guest at the wedding, was detained on Thursday, Aug. 31.
‘The investigation is ongoing, ‘ the source said, without further comment.
The police will compare his account of events with that of his friend, Baudoin said in a statement.
“My client has denied any involvement in the kidnapping”, Meraud said, adding that because his client knew the family, he of course would have had closer contact with Maelys over the course of the wedding.
He “provided a number of explanations that seem apparently plausible”, the lawyer said.
Gendarmes are scouring dense woodland, streams, rivers, caves and disused buildings for her and police have interviewed more than 250 people, including most of the 180 wedding guests.
Police dogs lost her scent in the auto park outside the venue, and police divers did not find anything during their search in a nearby river. The search was continuing on Friday.
The case is now being treated as a kidnapping, although Baudouin said investigators were cautious not to jump to conclusions.
On Saturday morning, more than 1,200 people were expected to participate in a “citizens’ search” for signs of the girl’s whereabouts, a private initiative organised via social media networks, and coordinated by about 15 gendarmes. “We’ve double-checked all the leads we have”.
