Earlier, the last date was August 31. Despite stern warnings over the last few days from the Income Tax (I-T) Department, the Indian government yesterday extended the deadline by four months for linking Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar to December 31.
Aadhaar is likely to replace PAN and other identification documents in financial markets and all other services to make it more convenient for people. The new deadline is December 31, 2017, the taxman said.
On July 31, the tax department had said that tax return filers would have to link their PAN with Aadhar by August 31 “unless a finding is made that Aadhaar is constitutionally not valid”.
However, with heavy traffic expected on the Income Tax E-filing portal, you can instead choose to link Aadhaar, PAN card via SMS also.
In addition to the extend Aadhaar-PAN deadline linking, the government have also given a month’s extension to small businesses and professionals to file returns by September 31. The deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar was previously July 31st but was extended to August-31. They were to just quote Aadhaar or acknowledgement number for having applied for Aadhaar. If the two are not linked by the end of the day, your income tax returns will not be processed, says a notification on the Income Tax E-filing website.
If you want to link the two but are not sure how to do it, you can use the e-facility launched by the Income Tax department, which is the easiest way to link the two.
Click on “Link Aadhaar” button to proceed.
This will only work if the details on the PAN and the Aadhaar card match.
