Korea rejects UNSC statement on missile test

On Tuesday, the reclusive nation fired a ballistic missile over Japan in defiance of UN resolutions and new sanctions imposed last month, which are expected to slash its export revenues by one-third.

North Korea, which claims Washington has long threatened it by flaunting the powerful USA nuclear arsenal, describes the long-range B-1Bs as “nuclear strategic bombers” although the United States no longer arms them with nuclear weapons.

The two leaders spoke in a phone call Friday.

The fifth nuclear test in September 2016 was measured to be possibly North Korea’s biggest detonation ever, but the natural disaster it caused was still not believed to be big enough to demonstrate a thermonuclear test.

South Korea’s development of its ballistic missiles is limited to range of 800 km (500 miles) and payload weight of 500 kg (1,100 pounds) under a bilateral treaty revised in 2012.

The White House said Trump gave Moon his “conceptual approval” for the planned purchase by Seoul of billions of dollars of USA military equipment.

North Korea watchers have been anticipating a sixth nuclear test, possibly thermonuclear, for quite some time. North Korean media also continues to imply that this week’s provocative missile launch over Japanese territory was but the “first military operation in the Pacific”, with more to come.

His comments were published hours after the US and South Korea conducted a mock bombing raid on the Korean Peninsula that was denounced by Pyongyang as a “rash act”.

“I think what I have made clear is what the United Kingdom is looking at and what the United Kingdom doing and that is looking at pressure on North Korea, which is discussions about further sanctions and it’s about the sort of change that China can bring”.

However, Kim added that South Korean attempts to develop nuclear weapons would meet with resistance from the US.

Here’s what you need to know about what has occurred since the launch by North Korea.

North Korea defends its weapons programmes as necessary to counter perceived USA aggression, such as recent air manoeuvres with South Korean and Japanese jets.

It’s one thing to take Russian President Vladimir Putin at his word that the situation between North Korea and the United States is escalating, but not his implication that the USA or President Donald Trump are at fault, Rep. Adam Kinzinger said Friday. South Korea also held a live-fire drill simulating the destruction of North Korea’s leadership.

Trump on Wednesday implied that diplomacy with North Korea is over, tweeting that “talking is not the answer”. “This complex mission clearly demonstrates our solidarity with our allies and underscores the broadening cooperation to defend against this common regional threat”. However, this approach clearly hasn’t worked.

The North has carried out five nuclear tests, most recently in September 2016. There is no proper way out. “I can’t help people who misinterpret things”, he said.

When asked about the tweet hours later, Mattis seemed to disagree, saying that “We are never out of diplomatic solutions”.
