Sikkim police prevent Bengal team from taking away arrested GJM members

GJM assistant secretary Jyoti Kumar Rai said: “They are traitors and have engaged in anti-party activities”.

GJM supporter Dawa Bhutia of Upper Newang, Merong gaon, Kalimpong was shot allegedly by West Bengal police near Gupti, Sadam, South Sikkim in connection to the Darjeeling unrest. Therefore, we questioned them.

Pradhan also alleged that Dawa Bhutia, 34, who is a resident of Kalimpong, died when policemen from Bengal opened fire at a place called Saddam near Namchi (the headquarters of South district).

“Corroborating evidence indicates that the person was shot at by West Bengal police officials”, he added. We have registered a murder case.

Sources said the victim has been identified as Dawa Tshering Bhutia, the driver of Dawa Lepcha – a former Gorkhaland Territorial Administration member from Pedong.

Speaking to VOS, South Sikkim Superintendent of Police Pratap Pradhan said, “Bengal CID officers entered Sikkim posing as tourists and later arrested several GJM leaders and supporters without valid documents”.

The tension between the two states started on June 20 when Sikkim chief minister Pawan Chamling wrote to Union home minister Rajnath Singh expressing his support for the new state being demanded by the Gorkhas. Sources added that at Namchi, Sikkim Police personnel confronted their Bengal counterparts, who were in plain clothes, after they arrested four GJM leaders.

When contacted, West Bengal Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Anuj Sharma refused to comment on the issue.

In this case three WB Police vehciles have been detained at Melli Checkpost of Sikkim whereas the erring WB Police team managed to flee and are absconding after carrying their insane operation. Why a lookout notice…?
