While residents in Houston and beyond are grappling with catastrophic flooding from Hurricane Harvey, media outlets and celebrity comedians spent Tuesday morning mocking the first lady over the high heels she was seen wearing while leaving Washington with President Trump.
Amid the online storm, the first lady had changed her shoes to sneakers by the time Air Force One landed in Texas. “Her ensemble implied that people’s personal stories would be ferried to her after they had been vetted and tidied up”.
But others agreed that her shoes shouldn’t be getting attention at all.
While it was odd for her to wear those heels, she certainly isn’t the only first lady in history that has been accused of being “completely out of touch with the situation”.
“What kind of message does a fly-in visit from a first lady in sky-high stilettos send to those suffering the enormous hardship, the devastation of this natural disaster?” griped Vogue columnist Lynn Yaeger.
And again, even if she didn’t change shoes, I think we can trust Melania Trump, a grown woman who probably understands how rain, weather, and floods work, to pick an appropriate pair of shoes for an occasion.
