Mexico has been adamant that it will not help fund a border wall between the two countries, but Trump said that he would eventually compel Mexico to pay for the wall through indirect mechanisms, such as a form of reimbursement.
“Mexico’s position at the negotiation table of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), will continue to be serious and constructive, always putting our national interests first, and seeking a beneficial result whereby the three North American countries win”, the Mexican Foreign Ministry said in response.
Trump also reiterated his view that Mexico would pay for the wall that Trump is seeking to build along the southern USA border with Mexico.
Trump tweeted Sunday morning: “With Mexico being one of the highest crime Nations in the world, we must have THE WALL”.
“I don’t really believe he’s concerned as much over Canada as much as maybe Mexico”, LePage said, referring to the president.
Canada, the USA and Mexico began formal negotiations earlier this month to rework the 23-year-old trade deal.
NAFTA is an agreement signed by Canada, Mexico and the USA to create a trilateral trade bloc in North America. “Mexico will pay for it through reimbursement/other (sic)”, he tweeted.
“Mexico will pay for the wall”. “There are parts like the Big Bend region – we don’t want see a wall in the handsome Big Bend National Park”.
“Just to add on, tremendous drugs are pouring into the United States at levels that nobody has ever seen before. And that’s another reason we need it”, he said.
“Mexico will not negotiate NAFTA, or any other aspect of the bilateral relationship, through social media or any other news platform”, it added.
This includes Canada also, he noted, saying American workers have lost their jobs due to the deal which has been one-sided for Canada and Mexico.
“From an economic issue, it is the least important thing we were talking about”, The Guardian quotes the president. “We’ll be able to stop them once the wall is up”, he added.
