Russian Gold Medalist Figure Skater Yulia Lipnitskaya Retires at 19

Russian Figure Skating Federation Honorary President Valentin Piseev told R-Sport Monday that Yulia Lipnitskaya made a decision to end sports career probably due to the previous health issues.

Per TASS news agency, reigning individual Olympic gold medalist Adelina Sotnikova will also miss the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, for Russian Federation because of an undisclosed injury.

In June, Russian Figure Skating Federation President Aleksander Gorshkov said that Lipnitskaya had not submitted plans for the 2017-2018 season.

Russian figure skating Olympic champion Yulia Lipnitskaya chose to end sports career. This was the first official mention of her suffering from an eating disorder.

“She is a great athlete with a great personality no matter how young she is”, the Russian sports minister said. We need to wait for a statement from Yulia – so far this is just talk.”Lipnitskaya won Olympic gold on home ice at the 2014 Sochi Games in the team event and claimed world silver in the singles in the same year”.

Lipnitskaya, who comes from the Russian Urals city of Yekaterinburg, hit the worldwide media headlines at the age of 15 in January of 2014, when she skated to gold in the Figure Skating European Championships.
