In what might have been the first and only time the starters will play together before the September 11 season opener, the presumed starting line got 15 snaps before coach Mike Zimmer started subbing players in.
If Bridgewater starts the season on the physically unable to perform list, he would be eligible to come off after six weeks.
“I’ve made up my mind, but I haven’t told the team yet or anything like that”, Zimmer said Tuesday, per Chris Tomasson of PP Twin Cities.
“He’s progressed a lot, ” Zimmer said. “I don’t watch him every single day”. At practice, he has gotten reps on both sides. The reports I get are all positive. He knows where he’s at and knows where he’s got to get.
Quarterback? Teddy Bridgewater, one year removed from a horrific knee injury that some thought would end his career, is “all-in, trying to get ready to play,”? Zimmer also added that it’s “mostly on run downs”. “He’s got to be able to protect himself on the field and be able to do the movements that are required by his position”, was Zimmer’s response when asked what Bridgewater must do to be cleared to practice.
For now, running back Jerick McKinnon said Bridgewater has “come a long way” since he went down a year ago. He said that it’s something he consistently reminds Hunter of and that he’s seen Hunter improve. He’s still being a team leader.
“I still think the trade was the right trade for us”, he said. Typically, starters don’t play in the final preseason game.
But after a poor performance by the starting offense and defense against San Francisco on Sunday, Zimmer is now considering giving them more of a tune up in Thursday night’s preseason finale. Robison did not participate in team drills. Right guard Joe Berger and right tackle Mike Remmers started at the spots they’ve manned all summer.
The Vikings trailed 14-0 at the half, but a wild second half gave them a victory when No. 3 quarterback Taylor Heinicke dived to extend the ball just inside the right pylon for a two-point conversion with no time on the clock. In the battle to start at center between rookie Pat Elflein and Nick Easton, Zimmer told NBC sideline reporter Michele Tayofa at halftime Sunday he had made up his mind without naming the victor. If Rudolph’s injury carries over to the regular season, the Vikings could end up keeping David Morgan, Carter and Bucky Hodges on the roster.
Four months later, Hodges remains confident that will happen.
One way or another, Zimmer’s comments mean business. He said he has decided what he wants to do. “So to me, that’s the next step in his development”. When Reiff returned to action against the 49ers, Hill was rotated in to relieve Reiff and then later played at right tackle with a different combination.
Zimmer said he believes the trade for Bradford was a good move.
