Coast Guard rescues man aboard sinking vessel near HRBT

Despite a request from the U.S. Coast Guard to call their Houston Command Center for rescue instead of posting on social media, many local residents stranded by Hurricane Harvey are still tweeting pleas for help.

The man’s wife contacted the Coast Guard at about midnight Friday, saying her husband called her to say his boat’s battery had died, his cell phone was dying, and his boat was taking on water.

Sector Maryland-NCR watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched a 29-foot Response Boat-Small II boat crew from Coast Guard Station Washington. The Cleveland Division of Police, Lakewood Fire Department, and Ohio Department of Natural Resources also joined in the search.

Members of San Diego Fire Department’s volunteer Task Force 8 have also deployed to the Gulf Coast, prepared to handle swift water rescues and hazardous materials.

“We’re using all the resources we can to find these gentlemen”, Drozdowski said.

A helicopter crew and dive teams assisted as well.

A second person identified as Michael Murphy, the boat’s owner, remained missing, Coast Guard officials said.

“I understand there is rain coming but we’re going to do our best through the weather conditions”, Drozdowski said.
