“We are very protective of that region, that’s all I can say”, Trump answered.
Trump says the USA considers the Baltic region a very important part of the world and that the U.S.is “very protective” of that region.
Earlier in the press conference, Trump said he hoped U.S. -Russia relations would be in a good place in the near future.
After taking several questions, Trump encouraged Finish President Sauli Niinistö to take an additional question. “Mr. Trump, would you consider Russian Federation as a security threat?” “We are very protective of that region”, Trump responded.
Niinistö said, “No, she is not the same lady”. We are very, very protective. “That’s all I can say”, Trump said.
Finland opposed Trump’s decision to pull the US out of an global climate change agreement.
Trump also said the US stands in solidarity with Finland after a man stabbed eight people in the city of Turku earlier this month, killing two, before police shot and detained him. The Soviet Union invaded Finland in November 1939.
“We have to be very careful that this huge training, this huge military traffic in the Baltic doesn’t cause any accidental problems”, Niinisto told reporters at the joint press conference.
He went on to extoll America’s relationship with the Baltic states, noting Vice President Mike Pence’s recent visit there, but did not explicitly identify Russian Federation. He signed legislation early this month imposing a new round of USA sanctions against Moscow.Trump called the Baltics “a very important part of the world”.
