One killed, 1 critical after Potomac River rescue

– Two people have died after being pulled from the Potomac River near the Key Bridge late Sunday evening, according to police. Witnesses said two people went into the water and did not resurface. One man was taken to a hospital in “very critical condition”, fire officials said.

Details of the incident near the Key Bridge – which connects the District with the Rosslyn area of Arlington – remained unclear on Monday morning.

Officials located the first victim about an hour later after the search began.

One person has been rescued and taken by EMS in critical condition. The other man was pronounced dead at the scene.

One man was found around 9:30 p.m.

A woman who said she knew both men told NBC Washington that they were all hanging out in Georgetown when one of the men made a decision to jump in the river. He said it appeared that the man was injured during the attempt and that the second man jumped in to try to save him.
